Dr. Michel R. Julien, Eng. (mining – Polytechnique of Montreal), M.Sc. (geo-engineering - University of Minnesota), Ph.D. (mineral engineering – Polytechnique), ASC, is vice-president environment for Agnico Eagle Mines Limited (AEM).
He joined AEM in 2011 and he is providing guidance, mentoring and alignment on key strategical issues involving environmental, rehabilitation and permitting aspects for AEM business units and divisions.
Prior joining AEM, he was a Principal with Golder Associates Ltd (Golder) where he contributed for over 20 years, mainly in the field of environmental management in mining. He became one of the leading figures in Canada in the field of tailings and mine water management. In particular, he has been Project Director of some important mine waste management projects in Canada and around the world.
Dr. Julien is also Adjunct Professor at the University of Toronto since 2012 in the Civil and Mineral Department. In particular, he has been co-responsible of the course Environmental Management for Mining.
He is also quite active in several associations like the Mining Association of Canada (MAC) where he has been involved in the update on the new version of the Guide to the Management of Tailings Facilities (3rd Edition). He has also been the chairman of the Research Institute on Mine and Environment (RIME) Polytechnique – UQAT between 2012 and 2016.
